Here are words commonly used on a college campus.

  • Adjunct Professor: A professor who works part-time.
  • Commencement: Another name for graduation.
  • Dean: Someone traditionally in charge of a major area of a college.
  • Discipline: Another name for college major or field of study.
  • Faculty: Anyone who teaches at the college.
  • Graduate Assistant/Graduate Advisor (GA): A graduate student who helps out in classes grading papers, leading seminar discussions, or teaching classes. Same is a Teacher Assistant (TA).
  • Instructor: An instructor is someone who is teaching at a college or university who does not have a PhD but may have many years of experience in their fields.
  • Office Hours: Times in which students may visit professors outside of the classroom to get help with or feedback on assignments.
  • Professor: Person teaching college courses who has earned a PhD.
  • Resident Advisor (RA): A student in charge of smaller sections of a residence hall who helps other students with adjusting to college, problems with their roommates, and advice on just about anything.
  • Teaching Assistant (TA): A graduate student who helps out in classes grading papers, leading seminar discussions, or teaching classes. Same as Graduate Assistant (GA)
