Student reading

On the surface, the college application process is simple: you choose a college, complete an application, and get accepted. In fact, there are many more steps involved in this process.

For example, you need to:

  • Do research to determine where you'd like to apply and what criteria you have to meet to do so.
  • Get recommendations from teachers, guidance counselors, etc., to help support your application.
  • Take standardized tests and submit your test scores if they are required by the school(s) to which you are applying.
  • Arrange for copies of your transcript be sent to the colleges to which you are applying.
  • Write personal statements/essays to explain what sets you apart as an outstanding candidate for admission.
  • Complete the FAFSA, so you can apply for financial aid.
  • Figure out whether it makes sense to apply early decision, early action, or regular decision.

The good news is, there are lots of resources out there to help you with the college application process. Teachers, guidance counselors, college admissions staff, and organizations like First Generation College Bound and the CollegeBound Foundation can all guide you as you prepare your applications.
